Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month

Mar 5th 2024

Every March we celebrate the successes of women that have left their mark in history and in contemporary society. This year the MFA blog wants to highlight some incredible women, as well as share related products featured in the shop.

1. Women Painting Women

This book is the perfect way to start the line-up. A thematic exploration of nearly 50 female artists who choose women as subject matter in their works. Women Painting Women includes nearly 50 portraits that span the 1960s to the present. These women paved the way for painting expression separate from the male interpretation.

2. Icons Notecard Box

Moving towards pop-culture, the Icon notecard box features a multitude of inspirational women from the 20th century. From pop icon Beyoncé to actress and socialite Audrey Hepburn. Mother’s Day is fast approaching, why not give an iconic card to an icon woman in your life.

3. Remedios Varo: Science Fictions

This stunning publication explores Remedios Varo and her emigration to Mexico City from Spain. She has left a lasting impression as a prominent name in Surrealism and the book recalls her many interests and how they influence her work. This set of works perfectly depicts life experience and the transient effect her experiences had on her artwork.

4. Frida Kahlo and Arte Popular

Yet another paragon of feminine greatness. Frida Kahlo was a proponent of textures and ceramics in depicting her Mexican cultural identity. She has a particular interest in self portraits and her Arte popular style continues to hold great importance in modern society. She found much inspiration from the work of carvers, weavers and sculptures, and used these objects in her work to portray her Mexican identity.

5. Blanche Lazzell Notecard Wallet

Blanche Lazzell was an American painter and printmaker. She is known for her white-line woodcuts based on Japanese ukiyo-e prints and modernism flair. She spent many summers on Cape Cod and in Provincetown before eventually relocating to Massachusetts.
