Carved from the limestone bedrock of the Eocene-era Mokattam Formation, the Great Sphinx of Giza is a colossal statue of a sphinx; a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. It stands on the Giza Plateau on the Nile's west bank in Giza, Egypt, facing eastward toward the rising sun. As the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt, the Sphinx forms part of the Memphite Necropolis and holds the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
