Anubis was an ancient Egyptian god, represented as a jackal-headed man and revered as protector of tombs, necropolises and the world of the dead, but also as an embalmer and inventor of mummification. During the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2055 BC - 1650 BC) he was replaced by Osiris as lord of the afterlife. One of his duties was to accompany the souls of the dead to the afterlife and to carry out the weighing of the heart, which was decisive for the admission of souls to the kingdom of the dead.
