Bastet is an ancient Egyptian deity, originally goddess of war, later over the centuries represented with the appearance of a cat, with the protective characteristics of a good mother: a Bastet amulet surrounded by kittens was common among women who wished to become pregnant. Her name was also associated with the precious pots for perfumed ointments, giving her the epithet of perfumed protector.
