Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760-1849)
The Wave off Kanagawa (detail)
Woodblock print, ink and color on paper
Katsushika Hokusai's iconic woodblock print is rich in symbolism and one of the most widely recognized works of Japanese art in the world. Hokusai’s print captures the spirit of Japan in the likeness of Mt. Fuji in the distance, seemingly small and humbled by the perspective of the great wave in the foreground, symbolic of the foreign influences that were at the time hazarding Japan’s identity by sea. A beautiful highlight from Hokusai’s “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji,” this piece is a haunting commentary on self, semblance, and change.
