UNIQLO x MFA Collection

Ukiyo-e prints were produced by a three step-process: the artist draws the image, a craftsman carves the woodblocks, and a printer applies the pigments to the woodblocks to print them on Japanese paper. As a result, many ukiyo-e works share the same motif but vary in textures and colors.

This collection is made by reconstructing many of Katsushika Hokusai's Ukiyo-e works produced in this way. Different editions of the same print have been combined for a fresh look at these beloved pictures.
