A mystery of mysteries, The Awdrey-Gore Legacy presents fictional evidence in the fictional murder of Miss D. Awdrey-Gore, once a prolific writer of detective stories and whose book covers you see here. Edward Gorey (writing as E. G. Deadworry), elaborates on the uncommon circumstances in which his slain heroine was found: in a disused fountain, sitting atop a gilt ballroom chair, and holding a tin lily. The ensuing discovery of cryptic clues neatly packaged in oiled silk—ostensibly her next novel—amplifies the conundrum. Edward Gorey, a fanciful fan of anagrams, was as celebrated a writer as Miss Awdrey-Gore. Creator of more than 100 works, he was also an artist, playwright, award-winning set and costume designer, and creator of the animated introduction to the PBS series Mystery! He hand-lettered the titles for all but one of his books, much like the covers of the four imagined novels that appear, for your delight, within this notecard set.
