La Petite Danseuse de Quatore Ans by Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917) is one of the most beloved sculpture pieces in the MFA collection. This bronze replica has been cast at half scale using the lost–wax method. Dating back centuries, this method requires that for each duplicate casting produced, a new wax model is poured and the whole process must be repeated. Weeks of work are involved in each reproduction. Each is an original made from its own wax model, and finished by hand. No two are exactly alike. The tutu is crafted using tea-dyed material to simulate the time-worn quality of the original. Made in the U.S.A.
