Thomas improvised with light, color, rhythm, and an aerial perspective that interpreted her world in a new way. After retiring from a nearly four-decade career in art education, Thomas reached her mature period as an artist. In 1972, at age 80, she had a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the first African American woman to do so.
